ACPS On-Time Graduation Rate Reaches 86 Percent
Graduation rates released by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) show that 86 percent of Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) students from the class of 2013 graduated on time, a rate that is an increase of 4 percent over the 2012 rate and is slightly below the state average of 89 percent.
“We are extremely pleased to see this increase in our on-time graduation rate,” said Acting Superintendent Margaret Walsh. “The steady improvement over the past six years is a great testament to our students and teachers, especially the increase in graduation rate and decrease in dropout rate among many of our student subgroups.”
ACPS experienced an increase in on-time graduation rates across all but two subgroups. Most notably, the rate increased 10 percent (from 70 to 80 percent) among Hispanic students and 18 percent among Students with Disabilities (from 72 to 90 percent). The rate dipped slightly, 2 percent, among White students, at 91 percent, and remained the same, 80 percent, among Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students. ACPS outperformed state graduation rates for Black, Students with Disabilities, LEP and Economically Disadvantaged subgroups.
The 11 percent overall dropout rate for ACPS in 2013 was down by 1 percent from 2012. That is above the state average of 6 percent. Most notably for ACPS, the dropout rate for Students with Disabilities fell from 21 percent in 2012 to 10 percent in 2013. This new figure is now slightly below the state average of 11 percent. In 2013, ACPS awarded 277 Advanced Studies Diplomas, 398 Standard Diplomas and 35 Modified Standard and Special Diplomas.
Virginia’s on-time graduation rate is based on four years of student-level data that take into account student mobility, changes in student enrollment and the needs of special education and LEP students. An on-time graduate for 2013 is a student who entered ninth grade for the first time during the 2009-10 school year and, in four years or less, earned one of the diplomas recognized by the Virginia Board of Education: standard diploma, advanced studies diploma, International Baccalaureate diploma, general achievement diploma, modified standard diploma or special diploma.
